Sandy Colton
Sandy Colton passed away on Dec. 25, 2008.
Sandy was a master photojournalist. He understood how to photograph without photographing.
He informed our way of seeing with his work at AP and especially his work bringing other people into the field. Not only his two sons, but also people such as Chip Maury who have continued as educators in the field. What does it mean to be a great photographer? I have thought about this for years and I think at some point the answer is that to be a master is to learn the art of photography without photographing. I am talking about legacy. Sandy Colton is a master that leaves a legacy as wide as it is deep. His influence through his friendship with Eddie Adams resulting in the over 2100 people who have attended the EAW and the Pulitzer count that he personally kept on the graduates, his sons reaching the top of the top magazines of the field… Influence comes in many forms.
